Pediatric Physiatrist

Dr. Amanda Ayala is a pediatric physiatrist in Morristown, New Jersey who is affiliated with Newark Beth Israel Medical Center. She received her medical degree from Rutgers New Jersey Medical School in 2008 and completed subspecialty training in Pediatric Rehabilitation at NY Presbyterian in 2013.

Physiatrists are physicians who specialize in helping patients with acute or chronic disabilities. Physiatrists can treat patients with a variety of conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord, nerves, muscles, joints, tendon, ligaments or bones. Physiatrists aim to treat the whole person and not just a specific problem area.

A pediatric physiatrist is a physician that has completed residency training in physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) with additional fellowship (i.e subspecialty) training in the care of children and adolescents.

Ultimately, physiatrists are “doctors of function,” with goals of improving function and quality of life in the areas of gross and fine motor skills, communication, cognition, and swallowing. We also focus on comfort and ease of care for those who need more assistance.

Dr. Ayala has a special interest in managing spasticity (abnormal muscle tone) and gait disorders.

Dr. Ayala does not have a patient age cutoff, and as long as patients continue to function at a level below age 21, she will try to accommodate patients on a case by case basis after their 21st birthday.
